TweetThis! Job Opportunity: HIV/AIDS Specialist, L-4 - Gaborone, Botswana

If you are a passionate and committed professional and want to make a lasting difference for children, the world's leading children's rights organization would like to hear from you. UNICEF seeks a HIV/AIDS Specialist to be based in its Office in Gaborone, Botswana.

The primary purpose of the post is to provide technical and managerial support to the SADC Secretariat, Directorate of Human and Social Development and Special Programmes. The post will seek to build the capacity of the SADC Secretariat to provide harmonization of approaches to supporting children affected by HIV, TB and Malaria in SADC Member States, and document and share best practices. The incumbent will work closely with the technical staff of the SADC Secretariat, as well as with the HIV technical staff of the UNICEF Johannesburg Regional Office Hub and with UNAIDS, particularly the Regional Support Team for Eastern and Southern Africa, based in Johannesburg. On a technical basis, the position will liaise closely as well with the WHO Intercountry Support Team, IST, in Harare.

Your profile:
  • Medical degree or advanced university degree in public health or closely related discipline.
  • Eight or more years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the development, implementation, management and evaluation of programmes to improve public health, particularly maternal and child health, and at least three years experience of supporting the development, management supervision and training of staff for programmes to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV and to treat children infected with HIV.
  • Familiarity with adult HIV treatment programmes, and with efforts in Eastern and Southern Africa to provide care and support to children affected by HIV and AIDS, some of which should be in the SADC region.
  • Familiarity with issues around malaria prevention and treatment an advantage.
  • Experience with policy development, management of policy implementation, advocacy and community and social mobilization useful.
  • Fluency in English and another UN working language required. Knowledge of the working language other than English of SADC Member States an asset.
If you have the experience of working in a similar capacity and want to make an active and lasting contribution to build a better world for children, send a detailed curriculum vitae in English, AND a duly completed United Nations Personal History form (available at www.unicef.org/employ), quoting VN-09-504 to: recruit.HIV@unicef.org.

Applications should be received by 8 September 2009. Only candidates who are under serious consideration will be contacted.

UNICEF's salary and benefits package is based on the United Nations Common System; visit www.un.org/Depts/OHRM/salaries_allowances for further information.
