Nursing workloads a global problem
Heavy nursing workloads are having a detrimental effect on patient care and health outcomes across the world, a global survey suggests.
In a survey of over 2,000 nurses from 13 countries, conducted by the International Council of Nurses, 92% of respondents said they faced time constraints that prevented them from spending sufficient time with individual patients. Nearly half said their workload was worse today than it was five years ago.
Findings from the survey also showed that nursing was viewed as a worse career today than it was five years ago in the UK, Canada, the US and Taiwan.
The council’s chief executive David Benton said: ‘Nurses globally are thinking about leaving the profession, which will further impact on already burdened healthcare systems. It is urgent to respond to their needs with adequate staffing, greater independence and greater involvement in decision-making.
‘Nurses must be involved in crucial policy conversations as healthcare systems are growing, developing and changing,’ he added.
