Fully funded 3-year PhD Studentships in Intelligent Transport Systems
Oxford Brookes University Doctoral Training Programme
Stipend:
£14,000 tax-free per annum UK/EU students (plus fees paid)
£12,000 tax-free per annum non-UK/EU students (plus fees paid)
Start Date: Sept/October 2009
The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Doctoral Training programme resides within the School of Technology at Oxford Brookes University. The School is situated in a new £8 million teaching and research facility. The School also has an international reputation in several research areas and performed well in the recent Research Assessment Exercise. For more details about our research please see http://tech.brookes.ac.uk/research.
The ITS programme focuses on the development of intelligent vehicle and traffic systems. The two main motivations for this research are: (a) the need for safe and environmentally sustainable transport systems, and (b) to develop technology for autonomous vehicles.
The programme invites applications for three fully funded PhD studentships in the following research areas:

The ITS programme focuses on the development of intelligent vehicle and traffic systems. The two main motivations for this research are: (a) the need for safe and environmentally sustainable transport systems, and (b) to develop technology for autonomous vehicles.
The programme invites applications for three fully funded PhD studentships in the following research areas:
- Autonomous Vehicles: Control and integration of systems so that vehicles can operate independently under different working conditions.
- Inter-vehicle Communication Networks: Devise vehicle broadband systems and ad hoc networks, to provide large bandwidth for video type applications and provide information about road conditions, vehicle locations and vehicle capabilities.
- Vehicle Sustainability and Recyclability: Develop sustainable and recyclable vehicles through the use of novel materials and design.
- In-vehicle systems for navigation, control and safety: Design appropriate vehicle interface control solutions. Improve safety, through air bag inflation, steering control and brake application, prior to impact. Integrate wireless sensors, to monitor vehicle performance and control autonomous vehicles.
- Electric and hybrid propulsion: Develop zero emission propulsion and smart control systems for charging, storing and delivering electricity.
- Vehicle awareness of road assets: Automate the analysis of road scenes, including identifying signs, road markings, obstacles, distances to other vehicles, pedestrians, etc.
