University of Hohenheim’s Food Security Center (FSC) seeks a Visiting Researcher
The Food Security Center (FSC) is a newly established university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation,” which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innovative scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of (sustainable) food availability, (economic) food access, food use, and food utilization. More information is available from www.foodsecurity.de.
Job summary
FSC seeks a visiting researcher from a developing country for a fixed-term appointment of three to twelve month, starting November 2009. The center wishes to attract a young innovative professional. The successful candidate will collaborate with the research staff of one of Hohenheim’s departments being a FSC member to conduct a specific research project contributing to FSC’s mission. Objective of the collaboration is at least one joint, peer-reviewed publication. Research proposal and results should be presented in the center’s seminar and/or lecture series. She/He is also expected to engage in FSC’s teaching and training activities at graduate and postgraduate level within the center’s Young Excellence School (YES) on a limited scale. Furthermore, FSC aims at establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the researcher and her/his home institution. The position is based in Stuttgart (Germany). The monthly grant equals a net amount of 1840 Euros in 2009 and 1990 Euros in 2010. Travel costs to/from Hohenheim will be covered. Health insurance and other potential costs must be paid privately.
Required skills
- PhD degree in agricultural, nutritional, natural, social, economic, or political sciences or related
disciplines with specification on food security related issues
- Nationality of a developing country according to DAC list
- Excellence in oral and written English language
- Ability to conduct innovative research
- Excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit
- Ability to work well in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment and with individuals fromdifferent scientific, societal, and cultural backgrounds and organizations from the public, private,and civil society sector
