Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship
Social Justice is an integral part of Canisius College and our Jesuit heritage, which is grounded in the philosophy of “men and women for others.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was at the forefront of social justice in America and we honor his life and his dedication to peace and equality through the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program.
Students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply for the scholarship; applicants will be evaluated on their personal achievements, their involvement in community service and their commitment to the ideals of Dr. King. Scholarship recipients will be awarded $1,000 each, renewable for four years with a minimum 2.25 grade point average while at Canisius and participation in COPE office programming as described on the back of the application.
The scholarship deadline is Friday, January 15, 2010 – the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students are encouraged to apply for admission to Canisius by January 8, 2010. Only first-time students admitted to Canisius prior to the scholarship application deadline will be considered for the scholarship.
Essay
Please write a 1-2 page essay (typed, double spaced) about one of the following quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and in what ways you demonstrate the quote’s meaning in your daily life.
1. “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
2. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?”
3. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.
Students who receive the MLK scholarship will be able to renew their scholarship for four years while studying at Canisius. The scholarship is administered by the Canisius Opportunity Programs for Education (COPE) office. The following criteria must be met by students each year in order to receive the scholarship award of $1,000.

- Cumulative GPA of at least 2.25
- 10 hours of service per semester in a community setting that fulfills a social justice mission
- MLK Scholars will meet with a COPE mentor twice per semester to select service placements, and to monitor personal and academic progress
- Be a first-time freshman entering Canisius in Fall 2010
